Sam thinks Winston has been tapped up
http://www.espnfc.com/story/2229764/sam-allardyce-fears-tapping-up-of-in-demand-defender-winston-reid

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce would not be surprised to learn that Winston Reid already has a verbal agreement with a new club.

Allardyce confirmed on Monday he expects the centre-back to leave the East London side in the summer, when his current contract expires.

The Hammers boss has made it clear the club are unwilling to sell Reid in the January transfer window for a cut-price deal, as they would rather retain his services until the end of the campaign.

Allardyce says West Ham have put "a million offers" to the 26-year-old, who has been linked with the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, over the past year, but there has been no progress.

As a free agent in the summer, the defender can, under FIFA transfer regulations, now talk to other sides -- but as Allardyce was quick to stress "only foreign clubs," before adding: "But can we prove it?

"We have had them [regulations] for a long, long time. If you can prove that they [clubs] have broken the rules, then they are in serious trouble aren't they? But you can't prove it these days. You hear rumours, this, that and the other.

"It might have nothing to do with the two clubs directly, it could be between two agents, so how can you relate that [back] to the football clubs? You can't, so it can all get done that way."

Allardyce added: "If he is not going to sign a contract [here], I [would] find it highly unlikely if it is not already verbally done. You have to accept the way it is and contrary to whether it breaks the rules or it doesn't, it happens.

BFS is being honest, players are getting tapped up although being a manager I would be surprised if he has not done it so he cannot complain.
The biggest problem I believe is that players should have to be bought for minimum their last 2 years salary as they have been trained, nurtured, nursed etc.

I heard that journo say that. He mentioned another team had come to that conclusion; Tottenham??

Re: Sam thinks Winston has been tapped up
I think BFS's point was really if he now gets a career threatening injury what happens as he is only entitled to his contract until the summer so he has to be careful unless he knows he already has a back up plan - but if the above happened that would be out the window as well.

No point in asking Allardyce to show restraint and dignity in such matters when he's spent his entire managerial career looking out for number one,and making sure his bank account gets as fat as himself.

It's easy to show restraint and dignity when you're on the verge of earning an absolute fortune.

Reid is free to do as he wishes but let's not make out that he's something he's not.

Sam - just stop talking. It's of no benefit to anybody to keep raking over this subject. Do your job - which includes keeping Reid focused and motivated as long as he is a West ham player. He is showing restraint and dignity. Why can't you?

Wenger did the same with Sol Campbell some years back.

Re: Sam thinks Winston has been tapped up
Scum you're probably right about him being tapped by Arsenal as Wenger does love a bargain, however there was a journo on the radio today who is apparently close to Arsenal who suggested that they've been watching him for a while and have come to the conclusion that although they feel he's a decent defender he's no better than what they have and due to his limitations on the ball, he's not what they want.

Definitely off to the emirates then

I just don't think it's very helpful for Allardyce to say this. I don't like these press conferences where managers just talk shit to give the papers a free headline or two.

Re: Sam thinks Winston has been tapped up
Bit of an odd thing to say, still plenty of time between now and the end of hte season.

Allardyce himself hasn't signed a new deal with us, does that mean he's been tapped up by another club and leaving when he's deal is finished?

Possibly Reid is waiting to see how we fair this season because last year was fucking dreadful. Maybe if we secure a top6/7 finish it might tempt him to stay, who knows.

The player himself could have potentially came out and explained his situation to stop all this speculation from happening, but rarely does that happen.

Allardyce has probably fucked it all up now by being a gobby fat northern shitcunt.

Re: Sam thinks Winston has been tapped up
I'm not too fussed should Reid move on. He's not up there with CBs such as Billy Bonds,Alvin Martin,Tony Gale,Marc Rieper,Slaven Bilic and Rio Ferdinand. The most you can say is he's been solid and reliable most of the time but his footballing skills fall short of the aforementioned class defenders.

Pagey,

Very good point about offering a more modest contract - being unprepared to even take that risk though has bitten us on the arse now!

I see what you're saying but with Reid yet to prove himself, we could have probably extended his deal for another couple of years on a modest contract as he wouldn't have been in a position to demand loads.

It's a really difficult situation and must be a hard job to try to juggle the finances and do what's best for the club. Especially with the amount of agents who all want their share too.

The players all have the power these days and they use it to their advantage. It's just a job for them in most cases.

"I think it would be in the clubs best interests if Allardyce stopped talking about this."

Totally agree. Allardyce moaning about the murky world of agents beggars belief.

Cheers Winston, good player for WHU. Even if he does stay until end of season, I think he's got the character to give his all for WHU until then.

I actually wish him well (he's never complained publicly) even if I think he's making a major mistake just based on £££..Grass, eh? Always greener.

He hasn't behaved in anyway that's derogatory towards the club, so I'd like to thank him for his service and wish him well for the future - unless of corse, he signs for Spurs or Chelsea.

People move on, people like a new challenge.

Agree with you both in theory about the two years left business, but unfortunately in this case, with 2 years left on Reid's deal, we had only just won promotion and I don't think the club were (rightly, imho) prepared to offer a huge deal to a player who had previously struggled at PL level.

All in all, we're slight victims of circumstance and timing in this instance. He's a good player I'd rather we kept, but not irreplaceable.
